June 5, 2023 Halsey and Suga’s version of Lilith for Diablo 4 has now been officially released, and you can watch below.
We know Diablo 4 fans are lucky-enough to be patiently awaiting what could be one of the best RPG games of all time, but The Game Awards has also revealed that the ever-talented singer-songwriter Halsey is collaborating with K-pop sensation Suga – from BTS – to release a brand-new version of the track ‘Lilith’ for Diablo 4. You may have heard that song before, but there’s not long to wait to see how the two deliver on a demonic variation of it.
Initially revealed by The Game Awards, the new version of Lilith has been made as the “anthem” for Diablo 4. The annoucement of the project included a very short teaser, hinting at an epic music video too – and now, we can finally see the finished product.
Halsey’s new rendition of Lilith is here, and you can listen and watch for yourself below:
Originally appearing on Halsey’s 2021 album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, Lilith is a song about Halsey’s destructive behavior, her regrets, and whether she’s too far-gone. We don’t know whether the decision to release a new version of this song for Diablo 4 was made because the main antagonist for the RPG is also named Lilith, but we can imagine it goes deeper than that. Daughter of Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, and the Blessed Mother, Lilith isn’t quite as one-dimensionally evil as she might seem at first. In the lore of the Diablo series, she has suffered from Mephisto’s hatred just as much as everyone else; in fact, she was one of the creators of Sanctuary, a place where her kind could find some sort of respite from the Eternal Conflict – a war between Heaven and Hell.
Interestingly, Halsey also performed the original version of the song – or, at least, a shortened version – during 2022’s The Game Awards.
This recreation of Lilith isn’t the first collaboration between Halsey and Suga. The track ‘Suga’s Interlude’ was recorded and released as a promotional single for Halsey’s 2020 album Maniac – featuring the South Korean rapper throughout. Recently, Suga invited Halsey to sing the song with him during his sold-out LA show – The Rolling Stone reported – and Halsey has since praised the rapper in an interview with NME, saying that the two “have the same smile… a lot of shared interests… [and that they] seem strangely connected on a creative wavelength”.
“He’s a true artist”, Halsey says, “which I’ve always known. But seeing the energy, versatility, creativity, and courageous darkness of the show blew me away.” You can listen to that song below:
It might feel a little odd, sometimes, to see charting artists collaborate to make video game music, but this is something that has been becoming more common in recent years thanks to the medium becoming increasingly more popular and respected as an art form. God of War Ragnarok composer Bear McCreary collaborated with Hozier to deliver the emotional ‘Blood Upon The Snow‘ for the action-adventure – which is one of the best PS5 games available. This one was also performed at The Game Awards, with McCreary on the hurdy-gurdy.
Similarly, AURORA recorded the incredible ‘Hunting Shadows‘ in collaboration with Ubisoft to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Assassin’s Creed series in September 2022.
We don’t know about you, though, but we think the new Lilith is a banger; we can imagine it’ll be something quite nice to listen to when grinding for the Diablo 4 max level too.
