Mounts are a way to travel quickly through the open world in Hogwarts Legacy. In this guide, you will learn which mounts are available in Hogwarts Legacy and how to get each mount.
What are Mounts in Hogwarts Legacy?
Mounts in Hogwarts Legacy are magical beasts that are tame enough for you to ride. Some mounts, such as the Thestral or Hippogriff, can walk as well as fly. Others, such as the Griphorn, only move on the ground.
Thanks to a mount, you can travel faster through the large open world surrounding Hogwarts. Explorable areas of the open world include the Forbidden Forest, the wizarding village of Hogsmeade, and other small hamlets where you can meet other characters and learn about their stories.
An alternative to mounts is the broom in Hogwarts Legacy. The broom is certainly the most well-known magical vehicle in the Harry Potter books and movies. In Hogwarts Legacy, you have the opportunity to fly with a broomstick, take part in broomstick races and explore the open world. Cosmetic and functional upgrades allow you to customize your broom.
Unlock Mount Feature
In order to unlock the mount feature in Hogwarts Legacy and gain access to mounts, you must first complete a quest. This is probably a quest in which you save the white Hippogriff Highwing and also get it as a mount.
As seen in the Hogwarts Legacy cutscene below, your companion Natsai Onai will assist you in the Highwing quest. Companions are schoolmates with whom you can develop a relationship and who can teach you new skills, for example.
How to Get More Mounts
According to the official website, it will be possible to tame, mount, and ride “some magical beasts” in Hogwarts Legacy. Additionally, you will receive the Thestral mount as a pre-order bonus and the Onyx Hippogriff from the Dark Arts Pack.
List of Mounts in Hogwarts Legacy
The following mounts have already been officially confirmed for Hogwarts Legacy.
Mount | How to Get |
---|---|
Thestral | Dark Arts Pack |
Hippogriff | – White Hippogriff Highwing: Quest – Onyx Hippogriff: Pre-Order Bonus |
Graphorn | Unknown, possibly through taming |
It is not yet known whether there will be other creatures that you can ride besides these mounts. However, the official statement that you can “tame, mount and ride some magical beasts” suggests that there will be more rideable beasts in the game.
Hippogriff Mount
A hippogriff is a hybrid of a horse and an eagle that can fly. Its hind legs, tail, and body are those of a horse while its head is that of an eagle. The front legs end in large claws. In addition, the hippogriff has gigantic wings. Hippogriffs have different coat colors, including chestnut, bronze, gray, or inky black. The color of the plumage on the head corresponds to the color of the coat.
A well-known representative of its kind is the hippogriff Buckbeak, which appears in the Harry Potter books and movies. As seen in the Buckbeak scenes, it is important to behave respectfully when encountering a Hippogriff. Before approaching these proud creatures, one should bow and wait for the hippogriff to bow as well.
In Hogwarts Legacy there are different color variants (= skins) of the Hippogriff mount. You unlock the white Hippogriff Highwing as part of a quest line. A skin for the Hippogriff is the Onyx Hippogriff.
- The Onyx Hippogriff is a pre-order bonus from Hogwarts Legacy on all editions.
- The Onyx Hippogriff is a darker version of the standard Hippogriff mount in shades of purple and black.
- According to the official website, the Onyx Hippogriff is a “pre-order exclusive”. Therefore, it will probably not be available elsewhere.
Thestral Mount
A Thestral is a horse-like, flying animal that also appears in the Harry Potter books and movies. The Thestral has a dragon-like head, skeletal body, and large leathery wings resembling a bat. A Thestral is only visible to people who have seen death, meaning to someone who was present when someone died.
Thestrals are classified as dangerous by the British Ministry of Magic. However, in the Harry Potter books and movies, Hagrid keeps a herd of tame Thestrals. Hogwarts’ Thestrals are primarily used to pull the flying carriages that bring older students to Hogwarts from the Hogsmeade railway station.
Thestrals are considered fast fliers that can cover long distances without problems. They can carry at least two riders and fly to the desired destination on command. These traits make Thestrals excellent mounts, even in Hogwarts Legacy.
In Hogwarts Legacy, the Thestral flying mount is included in the Dark Arts Pack.
- The Dark Arts Pack is part of the Deluxe Edition and Collector’s Edition of Hogwarts Legacy.
- However, Standard Edition owners can purchase the pack separately in-game after the release of Hogwarts Legacy.
- In addition to the Thestral Mount, the Dark Arts Pack also includes the Dark Arts Cosmetic Set and the Dark Arts Battle Arena. In the Dark Arts Battle Arena, you can test the Unforgivable Curses Avada Kedavra, Imperio, and Crucio as well as the Blasting Curse Confringo.
The Dark Arts Pack seems to be the only way to get a Thestral mount in Hogwarts Legacy. In the official Collector’s Edition unboxing video, Community Manager Chandler Wood explains, “The Dark Arts Pack includes […] the Thestral mount, which is the only way to ride a Thestral in the game […]”.
Graphorn Mount
A Graphorn is a large, hunchbacked beast with hard, greyish-purple skin, twin golden horns, and tentacle-like appendages on its snout. The Graphorn is able to deflect most spells.
In the Harry Potter books and movies, the Graphorn plays no part. However, the impressive beasts can be seen in the film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”. In it, Newt Scamander has the last Graphorn breeding pair along with two cubs in his suitcase during his visit to New York.
How to get a Graphorn mount in Hogwarts Legacy is not yet known. It is possible that you can tame Graphorns in the game and then ride them. It is also certain that you can keep a Graphorn in the Vivarium.
The Graphorn was confirmed as a mount in Hogwarts Legacy as part of the Brazilian entertainment festival CCXP in December 2022. In the following video by YouTuber XpectoGO you can see a player character riding a Graphorn from minute 1:10.
Can You Ride Dragons in Hogwarts Legacy?
Whether it will be possible to ride and fly dragons in Hogwarts Legacy has not been officially confirmed. Dragons have been featured multiple times in the previously released gameplay videos.
XpectoGO was featured as a guest commentator in the first major Hogwarts Legacy Gameplay Showcase. In the video below he has put together four reasons why he thinks it will be possible to ride dragons in Hogwarts Legacy.
One of the reasons XpectoGO lists is that the player character meets Poppy Sweeting as a companion in Hogwarts Legacy. Companions are schoolmates who you can befriend and who will then teach you new skills, among other things.
Poppy is very knowledgeable about beasts, so it’s possible for your character to learn about magical creatures from her. In a scene from the gameplay trailer, Poppy can be seen with the player character right in front of a roaring Black Hebridean dragon. This could be a quest similar to the Hippogriff Highwing, at the end of which you get a dragon mount.
