PROVO, Utah – The Utah County Commission chambers were wall-to-wall with members from the community concerned about how a proposed property tax increase would impact their wallets.
As of noon Tuesday, a vote on the 69% increase still hadn’t taken place.
The meeting began at 9 a.m., but commissioners didn’t begin discussing the property tax issue until approximately 11a.m. Officials also made time for public comment.
The proposed increase is down from the original 100%, but either way Utah County tax payers aren’t happy.
Commissioner Tanner Ainge was the first to discuss the increase and talked about living within the means of the budget.
“And that, in my opinion, is what’s reflected in this budget,” he said.
Ainge said county officials raising property taxes is a “difficult thing,” adding that three-fourths of the increase will be covering problems that already exist.
Some tax payers said they want to make sure money isn’t being spent on unnecessary programs.
“Taxpayers want to see these things eliminated,” said one resident. “They want to see their taxes reduced. … The bulk of the taxpayers want to see government spending less.”
