Lee grew up in south Devon and attended Decoy Primary School in Newton Abbot, but his family relocated to Ipplepen when he was seven years old. Lee was “always doing plays” despite not attending a drama school. He became a member of a theatrical group and afterward participated in amateur dramatics. Lee was a member of the musical group S Club 7, who rose to prominence in 1999 by appearing in their own BBC television series, Miami 7. They published four studio albums, and eleven singles, and sold over fourteen million records globally.
The ensemble won the Record of the Year award in 2001. Paul Cattermole left the group in 2002, and the name was altered from S Club 7 to just S Club. S Club announced its disbandment on April 21, 2003, during a live onstage performance. Lee first played Marius in Les Misérables at the Palace Theatre in London in 2004, and he reprised the role after the musical moved to the smaller Queen’s Theatre. He starred with Steps’ Faye Tozer and Hear’Say’s Noel Sullivan in the new musical Love Shack, which featured disco oldies and chart-topping dance numbers.
